Getting To Know Vernier
CMCSS has sets of Temperature Probes and Motion Sensors in all elementary schools. These tools are invaluable for collecting and examining data. In order to begin collecting data you will need:
Logger Lite Software installed on the teacher and student computers you will be using.
Probes or Sensors that have been checked out from your library.

Open and Find the Template for the Baggie Mitten Activity (this is a pre-made activity produced by Vernier, settings have been adjusted for you)

Motion Sensor-
Introduce Motion Sensor with a beginning student activity. This activity is to discover how the motion sensor works.
Integrate Math Standards so not only are students learning how to use this powerful piece of equipment they will be using math standards in real world (measure meters with meter stick, benchmarking using meters, working cooperatively, operating the computer software, collecting real world data, examining real world data and making sense of it, practicing following directions.
Discuss settings and parts of the motion sensor
Set Up- discover the correct position to place the sensor.
Groups will:
1. Set up motion sensors
2. Connect to computer and launch Logger Lite Software
3. Use the meter stick to measure benchmarks of one meter, two meters, three meters with masking tape on the floor.
4. Group Roles: Three members will be the collectors and one will be the mover in front of the sensor
5. Place Cards face down each time a card is turned over the members direct the mover to move that amount.
6. Stop and draw conclusions about data. (What is happening when you move closer/farther away from the sensor? What happens when you are standing still and collecting data? What happens as you move more briskly? Can the sensor measure you moving up and down? How can you test to see if it can measure up and down?)
7. After we have drawn conclusions about how the sensor works, we will use the feature that allows users to match the path button. This will apply what user have learned about the sensor.
8. Discuss how this could be used in classroom.
